It’s Been How Long?

In the town of Mundelein, Illinois, a story of determination, passion, and unwavering commitment to craft beer has been unfolding for what seems like forever. Tonality Brewing Company, founded by Zach Gelfand, Don Phillips, and Tony Bena, is a testament to the power of perseverance. After four long, arduous years of overcoming challenges and setbacks, we have finally realized our dream of opening a brewery that will redefine the craft beer scene in

Inception: The Brewing a Dream

In 2015, Don was the founding president of the North Urban Brewing Society, a homebrew club that meets monthly at Perfect Brewing Supply in Libertyville. Tony was also a founding member and quickly was elected Brewmaster. Only a few months later, Zach moved to Mundelein, bringing his passion for homebrewing with him. Zach met Don at the counter of Perfect Brewing Supply, and a friendship quickly developed with Don even bailing Zach out the first time he made beer on his new brewing system. After knowing each other for a few years, we realized that we all had a similar dream and a similar vision of that dream: Quality is Everything. This was in May 2019, so don’t worry, it only took us four and a half year to open our doors…

Challenges Along the Way

No business is ever launched without significant challenges and headwinds, but between COVID, a dishonest negotiation, and the typical surprises that come along with retrofitting a 75+ year old building, we’ve definitely had our more than fair share. All in all, there is nothing that was going to stand in the way of us fulfilling our dream and we are so excited to be able to share that with you.
